Having a fast workout

I don't have much spare time so it's important to me that my gym workouts get the best outcome in the shortest time. I have done a lot of research into the more efficient gym routines and have been doing some comparisons on how effectively each routine builds muscle, burns calories and improves my blood pressure. This blog is my way of keeping a track of the different routines I have tried and showing how everybody responds differently to different workout regimes. I hope it will be useful for other people trying to get maximum effect in the minimum time.

How To Interpret Satellite Imaging To Locate Game Fish

Recreation & Sports Blog

When you've chartered a boat for a day's deep sea fishing with your mates, you'll want to know every trick in the book when it comes to locating those really big billfish.  A good fishing charter vessel will have the very best in satellite imagery technology to help you locate potential hotspots quickly, without spending hours trawling around just trusting in luck.

Here's a guide outlining the basics that you'll need to know in order to use satellite imagery technology on your fishing charter trip.

Key factors

Satellite imagery systems provide numerous different identifiers to help target offshore game fish.  These include:

  • water clarity
  • water temperature
  • structure
  • sea surface height (altimetry)
  • direction of current
  • rotation of bodies of water
  • thermocline depth
  • water salinity
  • wind direction and strength
  • tides and moon phases

Of all these factors, there are three key areas that you should focus on in order to make the process simpler but equally as effective.

  1. Water temperature — Water temperatures can be very variable, especially during seasonal changes.  Game fish such as tuna and white marlin prefer warmer waters, typically around 20°C, but blue marlin prefer things a little warmer before they begin to appear in abundance. You should therefore begin your search by looking for water temperatures in your immediate fishing area that are sufficiently warm enough to attract the species that you're hoping to find.  All you need to do is take a quick glance at your satellite imagery charts to see the accurate water surface temperature.
  2. Water clarity — The next area of interest in your search is the chlorophyll content of the water in areas that are of the right temperature.  Areas that are dense in chlorophyll usually contain large numbers of the small organisms that bait fish feed on.  A dense concentration of bait fish usually means that there will be a good number of game fish nearby. Note here that billfish prefer to inhabit bluer waters, but will often be found inhabiting the area between the blue and green water where food is plentiful.  When trawling these areas, keep an eye out for other marine life, such as porpoise, flying fish, and birds whose presence indicates plentiful food, both for them and for your target species.
  3. Structure — If the other conditions are right, offshore game fish are usually found in numbers around structure.  Structure refers to natural topography such as canyons or seamounts, as well as manmade objects including buoys, oil rigs etc.  This is because structures push micro-organisms to the surface of the ocean, creating a perfect feeding area for bait fish.  The structures also provide shelter for bait fish and for the game fish that hunt them.

In summary

Before you head off on your fishing charter trip, first check the satellite imagery system for an area where the temperature is perfect for your target fish.  Within that temperature zone, look for areas of green water that will provide food for the micro-organisms on which bait fish feed, but which are abutted by clear blue water.  Finally, look for these conditions that are also over a site which has structure.

Happy hunting!
